Neat handwriting doesn’t start with writing letters. It starts with strong fingers, a good pencil grip and lots of fun hand movement. If your child presses too hard, tires quickly or writes letters that wobble, these pencil control activities can help.
Part 1: Build finger strength (no pencil needed)
- Play dough: rolling, squeezing and pinching dough is one of the best hand exercises.
- Peg and clip games: clip clothes pegs around the edge of a box or plate.
- Tearing paper: tear old paper into small pieces to make a collage.
- Picking up small things: move dried chickpeas or beads from one bowl to another with fingers or tweezers.
Part 2: Practise control on paper
- Straight lines first: standing lines, sleeping lines, then slanting lines, from left to right and top to bottom.
- Curves and zig-zags: waves, loops and mountains prepare children for letters like c, s and m.
- Mazes and dot-to-dots: they train the eyes and hand to work together.
- Tracing pictures: trace animals, fruits and shapes before moving to letters.
- Colouring inside lines: start with big shapes and move to smaller ones.
Part 3: Check the pencil grip
- The “tripod” grip: the pencil rests on the middle finger, held by the thumb and index finger. Short, thick pencils or crayons make this easier for small hands. If your child grips with the whole fist, gently show the tripod grip and practise with short daily sessions.
How often should children practise?
Little and often works best: 10 minutes a day is better than an hour once a week. Stop before your child gets tired or frustrated, and praise effort, not just neatness.

Frequently asked questions
At what age should children start pencil control activities?
Finger-strength play can start around age 2–3. Most children are ready for lines, curves and tracing between ages 3 and 5.
My child writes letters backwards. Is that normal?
Yes, reversing letters like b and d is very common up to around age 6–7. Keep practising gently; if it continues much longer, talk to your child’s teacher.
